The monuments of Rocchette
The town is also rich in history because the remains of the famous Forte delle Rocchette which overlooks the beach and the sea. This building was built in the twelfth century under the order of Cosimo I de ‘Medici. At first, the Fort served as a watchtower to protect the coastal population from the Saracen invasions. Later, it was refortified in order to strengthen the whole defense system of the coast belonging to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The Fort is about 30 meters high and is characterized by walls scarred by ancient battles and the trunk of the tower. The central part of the fort was the quarters in which housed both the commander of the garrison and an oven, a barn, and even a tank. Now a private property, today you can only admire the ruins from the outside. Near the Forte delle Rocchette, you can also take advantage of many facilities available to stay for vacation.
