General Information

Punta Ala is a famous tourist resort that is part of the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia in the province of Grosseto. Punta Ala is located along the provincial road 158 Collacchie. It is 22 kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, 20 kilometers from Follonica, and 45 kilometers from Grosseto. The seaside resort is famous for its harbor, which is called Marina di Punta Ala. It is a marina divided into three basins with thirteen piers, which makes its 893 berths available to customers, 90 of which are reserved only for transit boats that do not exceed 28 meters in length. At the base of the port of Marina di Punta Ala is the Yacht Club Punta Ala, where they have created the Luna Rossa project. It is a famous Italian yacht that competed in the America’s Cup in the 2000 and four editions of the Louis Vuitton Cup. Punta Ala is also famous for its golf course, the Golf Club Punta Ala ,one of the largest in the region.

Punta Ala (in ancient times known as Punta Troia), was first an Etruscan port and then became a Roman port. The Italian aviator Italo Balbo gave it its name in the early 1900s. He performed the first successful flight across the Atlantic Ocean; starting from an air base in Orbetello, called Punta Ala. After buying some fortresses and villas in the resort to make it his residence, renamed Punta Ala to remember his guests. The city, as we see it now, had its development in the late ’60s around its port and the nearby pine forest.

Places to visit

Although it is very small with less than 400 inhabitants, Punta Ala is a city full of monuments and places of interest to visit. There are numerous civil architecture, religious, and military buildings to be admired. Although there are too many to list, here are some of the most famous. Just past the cities’ many private villas, a visit should definitely be made to the Castello Medici, the Hidalgo Tower and the Tower of Appiani, which formerly marked the border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Principality of Piombino. The Church of the Lady of Consolata, a towering building constructed in copper and wood in the early 60s, the Chapel of St. Anthony, a small church which is located inside the castle that dates back to 1707 and the necropolis of Poggio Tondo, located in Cala Civette beach are also among the many places to see.

There are two famous beaches of Punta Ala, Cala Civette and Rocchette beach. However, in the typical Tuscan town there is also a free beach in the shade of the pine forest. Despite Punta Ala’s popularity, it is far from the idea of crowded noisy beaches. You can also easily take a nap in the shade of pine trees or under an umbrella. Cala Civette is located north of Punta Ala, it is most probably the most wild beach around the Gulf of Follonica as it is not equipped for visitors. Rather, The Rocchette beach is equipped for visitors and finding a free beach in this area can be very difficult. In addition to the beach resort, there is a restaurant by the sea and this beach is well worth the five sails awarded by Legambiente since 2005.
